Munich Germany, July 1942.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Hans Scholl and his sister Sophie were part of &#8220;The White Rose&#8221;, a group that opposed Hitler and the Nazi party. Hans served as a medic on the Eastern (Russian) front from late July to October 1942.  One month later, 300,000 Germans were trapped in Stalingrad and only 5,000 returned to Germany. . .<\/p>\n<p><em>to continue, use the page links to the right<\/em><br \/>\n<!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>Hans and Sophie were arrested February 18, 1943 for distributing leaflets and indicted for treason. They were &#8220;tried&#8221; February 22, 1843 along with their friend Cristoph Probst, found guilty, and executed by guillotine later the same day. A moving account of the trial and visits with their parents during their last hours is toward the end of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org\/jsource\/Holocaust\/rose.html\">this article<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>12 or so years ago, my son Jim acquired the above photo. He and his friend Eric wrote the following poem at that time.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;   &#8212;   &#8212;<br \/>\n<strong>WHITE ROSE<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>They are the things of nursery rhymes<br \/>\nSuch as ones you read to children \u00e2\u20ac\u201c<br \/>\nUnknowing toddlers suffering parents\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 crimes<br \/>\nAnd burned beneath the ashes of Dresden:<br \/>\nPetals falling to the ground.<br \/>\nSophie stares darkly serious<br \/>\nWith heavier weight than should be<br \/>\nAllowed for a woman on twenty-one.<br \/>\nBut everyone carried burdens.<br \/>\nThree hundred thousand bodies<br \/>\nmake the conscience sour,<br \/>\nShameful that a much larger number<br \/>\nwould be necessary to sate one man\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s<br \/>\nThirst, or earn<br \/>\nrighteous  vengeance.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>For Hans, perhaps no healing powers<br \/>\nEver learned could stop the burns and amputations<br \/>\nfrom the<br \/>\nEAST<br \/>\nOr mend the bleeding of a people<br \/>\nOnce vast<br \/>\nOnce proud<br \/>\nOnce beautiful.<br \/>\nAnd more than beauty, the daisy<br \/>\nsits<br \/>\nClose to Sophie\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s bosom,<br \/>\nIn its last bastion of protection<br \/>\nWhere life and beauty survive<br \/>\nIf only for a moment \u00e2\u20ac\u201c<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Innocence lost, like blood drained and<br \/>\nWhitened leaving zombies in blind sleep;<br \/>\nRed sapped from passionate roses<br \/>\nStifling growth,<br \/>\nCultivating compliance,<br \/>\nLeaving only a single symbol<br \/>\nOf virginity<br \/>\nOf purity<br \/>\nOn aninimity<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>White Rose<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Copyright \u00c2\u00a9 Eric Duckworth and Jim Doty III<br \/>\n&#8212;   &#8212;   &#8212;<\/p>\n<p>You can learn more about Hans, Sophie, and the White Rose <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jlrweb.com\/whiterose\/index.html\">here<\/a> , <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org\/jsource\/Holocaust\/rose.html\">here<\/a>, and (if you speak German) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gegen-diktatur.de\/t_anzeige.php?tafel_id=10&#038;thema=0\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie&#8217;s story has been made into a critically acclaimed movie that will be released in major U.S cities between February and May.
